Dear All

Nevis is awfully thin but has had a really bad tummy in the month that I have had him. He started on on Salters maintenance - but had far too high a fat content (our other two dogs look lovely on this). He is now on Pedigree complete (to try and calm his tummy plus pacify hubby). However, he probably gets around 1500 calories per day in starches (bread/pasta/rice). He has bulked up and is not so weak behind. Two questions

1. Am I right in thinking that the calorific requirement is around 2500 per day.

2. Am I doing him any harm with this much high sugar food.

Please bear in mind that I have taken him to the vet already for his tummy, he only weighs 53 kg and he is a really tall dog. I am scared to increase his proper food in case it starts going through him again and he looses what little he has gained.

The first thing you need to do is sort out his tummy - if he is has diarrhoea or any other digestive upset you will struggle to put weight on him. What did the vet say the cause was?

If there is no veterinary cause, you could try feeding satin balls; you'll find the recipe on the forum. You could also try tripe, but it is high fat again. Also, dogs cannot digest cereal - it is used as a "filler" in dog food - so I personally wouldn't add more of the same to try to put weight on.

If he is a young dog it could take him a while to fill out anyway - ours still looked a bit rakish at 2.

Like Hazel said some danes take time to put on weight.

If he still has a problem with diarrhoea has the vet given you a paste with a pro-biotic? (can't remember the name at the moment but could find out if you are interested.)

If he hasn't been looked after too well, has he been checked for parasites other than worms?

Sorry to doubt your vet but they don't always look beyond the obvious to begin with.

Good luck with your new family. I'm sure they will all soon have your hubby under their paws!!

Hi,

I see from your 'wood chewing' post that your boy is only 10 months old and so as long as the vet has ruled out any medical cause, I wouldn't worry too much about weight yet. Nevis is still very young and at the terrible teen stage, hormones racing all around and other things to worry over but food!

My Zeus was a nightmare to feed when young and I used to worry that people would think he was a cruelty case because he was so thin. I persevered until he was 3 1/2 years old and fully matured, then I had him castrated. It was the best thing I did for him, as he had always been of a nervous disposition and it calmed him down and has meant that he now eats well and has filled out nicely.

I have heard from other people that Pedigree Complete works well with Danes that have slightly delicate tummies, so hopefully you will see an improvement.

Good Luck,

Debbie.

😄 H i There, Harrys quite skinny too and he used to have a dogy tum till i put him on Supa Dog Sensitive, hes fine now but stiil skinny even after adding tripe... but hes happy n healthy in all other departments so i dont worry too much,as has been said before they are like humans too..... some fat some skinny!!!! 😂 😂and hes still a lickle baby too... awwwww 🥰

Zelda is almost 11 months and weighs 53kg. I'm sre her friends would agree that she isn't skinny by any means 😄
She is fed on Supadog sensitive with pilchards at one meal and tripe at the other.
