Sores On Elbows

hi, im interested in any help preventing sores on lycan my 9mnth danes elbows. he has big bed in livingroom and bedroom. we also have bought a giant sheepskin rug for middle of floor if he wants to sleep there. we are putting sudocream on them just now and he has all comforts vet told us he needs to prevent them.i would be grateful for anyones experiences or advice on this matter. many thanks

Hi, Unfortunately because of the GD's bone structure, & the fact that there isn't a lot of hair or padding around the joints, they will get hard skin & lumps on the knees & elbows. The best advice I can give is too provide a thin floor mat for them too lie down on when they get too warm, & try too discourage lying on concrete or tiled & lino flooring. My partner does make some attempt too file down the build up of hard skin, but your Dane may object too this...she uses a standard ladies nail board & very gently,,without a great deal of pressure, takes off a very small amount @ a time so's not too distress the dog. If you think your dane can cope with this, please be very carefull how far down you rub with the file as there's a danger you may hit the healthy skin & make the situation worse. Hope this helps

Hiya-try 'udder cream' it worked a treat on our second rescue who came to us with a lot of hard skin on her joints.

Yes, as Den & Guy have said, udder cream helps a lot.  Unfortunately, many Danes will find a hard concrete place to lie on especially in hot weather, despite all your efforts to provide the best in soft beds so it is not easy to avoid these calluses.

Perhaps one of the mods may like to move this topic to a more appropriate forum.

His elbows should be ok, its usually only dogs who have been left lying on concrete who develop elbow problems,

If hes got his own sheepskin rug im sure he will be fine

If dogs lie on concrete all the time and its damaging  they can get blister like things on the elbows which develop to  protect against more pressure damage, they are like fluid sacks on the elbow under the skin. If given a soft place to lie the sacks usually slowly go down by themselves when they are no longer needed to protect the elbow.
 
Duke has a hard patch on one of his front elbows. Its gradually getting smaller and hair is starting to grow over it again.  we figured the previous home probably didnt provide a nice, soft padded bed/mattress to sleep.  Now he helps himself to the sofas and has his bed he sooooo likes them and itmust be less stress on the boney bits!
 
We had the same issue with Cain, still do but not as bad now.  Hazel form this site said udder cream to me and it worked a treat

   We got it from a local country farm stores.
 
are the elbows sore now? if not i wouldnt be inclined to put anything on a pups elbows that would soften them up, as this could lead to serious issues in the future, the sudocrem, udder cream etc is meant to soften the callouses

i agree- just ensure he has lots of nice padded bedding, its due to pressure from their body weight that can cause these, but clara has none and she is nearly 10. she has her own sofa and confy bed, i have to say she has never lowered herself to lying on straight on the floor even when its hot

  but i have plenty of vet bedding to put down outside when its hot. so she is always comfy.

Earlier today I said that udder cream would be good, however, I was a little careless reading your post and did not pick up that you were talking about preventing calluses.  I had assumed that your puppy already had calluses.  Of course, you should not be medicating perfectly clear elbows and knees.  Just ensuring that the puppy has soft, comfortable bedding available.
 
Hi these are known as  hygromas I believe.. , they occur over any bony prominence or pressure points, sort of a fluid filled lump..Ive got some remedies info on these are find for you if your interested..as a future reference..

i find it hard stopping my two from lying on hard floors , its cool there and they like it  ...! when buster got sores i used udder cream and this worked well , when he was poorly we gave him a sofa  but he would still lie on the floor

My mum got a rescue dog when he was 2 1/2 years old - he was a dobermann x dane so his owners expected him to be vicious and scary (he was neither

), apparently he lived outside in a kennel until someone reported his owners - he had sores on his elbow and the underside of his stomach, bumpy and grey but we were told not to worry about them, not sure if this was the right advice.  They never got worse and they never bothered him though.
 
That's the word Trev a 'Hygroma', i couldn't remeber it,

i found a pic, its just a sck of fluid to protect the bone underneath.

thnks for all your advice,lycans hair is thinning and pink at elbows. a worry for my husband as our 5yr old bitch has them she not in any pain with them. im interested many of you said your danes had own sofa? all mine always have and was told off by vet saying it wouldnt help elbows and to use sheepskin rugs? i treat my dogs like babies they have big beds but generally share our kingsize bed vet also said that wasnt best for there elbows?please anyone got advice.yes its a vet but dane owners seem to know better with experience.
 
We have never had this problem with hyndrick and he is 8 but when we rescued tinsel she had a few and i used to put sudafed on it to help....Another thing you could try is an aloea vera plant which may help. You take the juice from the leaves and would apply...
