Eye Sight

Hi folks, just wanted to pick your brains about eye sight in danes.

 

Jake will be 7 this year, his eyes seem fine in the sense that there has never been any problems with them in the past, infections or anything and they are not cloudy like in previous older dogs iv had, but i do think there is a problem. 

 

The last few weeks when out walking, especially on roads he shires away from say, an on coming van, he seems really weary of traffic to the point that i walk him on much quieter roads now, at first i was thinking he was just being unusually nervous but yesterday he walked into a wheely bin and its not the first time either but the last time i put it down to him simply not watching what he was doing and he has walked into a post as well, again i thought the same. But know im wondering if its his eyesight and that there is maybe some loss of sight? or focus?

 

Can my vet test for this?

I do think you should consult a vet, but I also think you will need a specialist referral for a really thorough check.  GP vets are great, but they don't tend to have the range of different gadgets for testing eyes.  

 

I had a specialist referral for Marble when I thought he only had a cataract.  David Habin, who is on the BVA panel for eyes, did it at Calder Valley Vets in Mirfield, which is a specialist ophthalmic centre, and he brought out an unbelievable number of toys.  The £100 it cost me was excellent value for money - and yes, he did confirm that Marble had a cataract but we also discovered that he had goniodysgenesis (which can be a precursor to glaucoma and which you can't see externally) as well.
